How to make a living online from writing about how to make a living online from writing

It seems to be the trick these days.

An old colleague opened my eyes to this one after I banged on about Tim Ferriss’s 4-hour Work Week revelation.

“Yeh, he basically made a MINT from selling his book about being able to work within a 4-hour week… before he actually did it himself… and then he made so much money that he was able to do it himself.”

Clever. The old bait and switch. I think that’s what it’s called.

Now, I don’t know whether it’s true, but a lot of what I see on Medium at the moment points to this: I follow a good number of people on Medium who write about how to write online and make a living.

They have tens of thousands of followers who no doubt read their content, earn them commission and, in doing so, feed the machine, so that the author can make money online writing about making money online.

They write click-bait headlines and include ‘follow me for more amazing articles!’ pleas at the end, making commission out of Medium in the process.

Part of me says “good on them!” It’s genius, really.

But part of me wants to ask: “what do you actually write about, though?”

Is there actually any thought-provoking, life-enhancing content being shared? Or are they just writing about being successful writing online?

Is it just me or do these people who talk about how to be successful writing on Medium just make money from Medium from being successful writing about how to be successful?

Ok, my head just exploded.

Please follow me and subscribe to Medium so that this blog/article can continue to make me money.

Actually, I don’t make a penny from this. Oh well.
